O excesso de gordura no corpo na meia-idade já é considerado um fator de risco para a demência. O motivo? Esta é uma questão com poucas respostas, mas acaba de ganhar uma nova pista. Um estudo recente da Universidade de Washington sugere que um tipo específico de gordura localizada na barriga está ligado à principal causa do Alzheimer e pode ser um sinal precoce da condição.
As descobertas foram apresentadas na Reunião Anual da Sociedade Radiológica da América do Norte (RSNA), que ocorreu entre os dias 1 e 5 de dezembro de 2024. Os resultados detalhados ainda não foram publicados.
Gordura abdominal pode ser um predecessor do Alzheimer
Dois estudos consecutivos apontaram que um tipo de gordura localizada mais profundamente na barriga está ligada a maiores níveis de aglomerados de proteína amilóide no cérebro.
A principal causa conhecida do Alzheimer é o acúmulo dessa proteína, que se torna tóxica para os neurônios.
A gordura em questão, chamada visceral, só pode ser medida por ressonância magnética (RM) e influencia a produção de colesterol e insulina no organismo.
Na primeira investigação com indivíduos de cognição saudável, entre 40 e 60 anos, aqueles com mais gordura visceral no abdômen apresentaram maiores níveis de amilóide no córtex direito, fino, e em outras áreas do cérebro.
Uma sequência deste estudo, conduzida com 80 pessoas, descobriu que a quantidade de gordura visceral, em comparação à subcutânea – que fica abaixo da pele – na barriga, está ligada ao aumento de amilóide no cérebro.
Essa relação seria responsável por 77% dos efeitos do alto índice de massa corporal (IMC) no acúmulo de amilóide no cérebro, segundo a pesquisa.

O colesterol “bom” também pode ser um vilão A equipe de cientistas também encontrou maiores quantidades de proteína amilóide no cérebro dos participantes que apresentaram níveis baixos do chamado colesterol “bom” – a lipoproteína de alta densidade (HDL). Sua produção é influenciada pela gordura visceral, como já mencionado. Estudos anteriores mostraram que grandes quantidades desse colesterol podem aumentar o risco de demência em até 42% em adultos mais velhos.

Pessoas com resistência a ela tendem geralmente a ter encolhimento cerebral, outro fator de risco para problemas cognitivos no futuro.
Como prevenir o Alzheimer? A relação entre a saúde do corpo e do cérebro é complexa, e mais estudos são necessários para entender melhor como o Alzheimer está relacionado ao excesso de gordura e ao IMC elevado.
Independente disso, praticar atividade física regularmente e seguir uma dieta saudável é a melhor maneira de proteger o seu cérebro e todo o seu corpo.
